In 2010, the Pink Pals recognized a need for supportive programs that were not yet offered for York Hospital’s breast cancer patients, and have since raised $700,000 to help the hospital establish a new fund. The Pink Pals are four dynamic women who have pulled out all the stops to create their signature events year after year. They are Cathy Barnhorst, Leslie Ware, Barbara Conda, and Ellen Baldwin.

“What we accomplish is small compared to what these women(with breast cancer) face,” Barnhorst said. “Their courage is just so admirable.”

“We are so passionate about what we do,” Ware added.

The Breast Cancer Living Well Fund at York Hospital now supports new programs and initiatives to soften a patient’s breast cancer journey.

Some of these include creative expression and journal writing, nutritional counseling, strength and flexibility classes, massage and acupuncture, emotional support & guidance, and financial assistance for those in need, self assurance programs, specialized products such as wigs and camisoles, and even a day at the spa to rejuvenate  – all important to assure patients’ psycho-social needs are met throughout their journey. The fund also supports BRACAnalysis and other appropriate genetic testing for those in need.
