Wells Lady Warriors donate $30,000 to York Hospital at their 4th Annual Shootin' For A Cure Basketball Fundraising event
On Saturday, January 19th, the Wells High School Lady Warriors Basketball Team capped off their
victory against Traip Academy with another meaningful win in the fight against cancer. The team, coach Don
Abbott, and a crowd of hundreds were witness to the players presenting York Hospital President Jud Knox and a team of staffers from the Breast Care Center an oversized check in the amount of $30,410 that they, and fellow classmates, friends, family members and players ‐ from those in the 5th grade through to seniors ‐ raised to support the programs and services York Hospital offers breast cancer patients via the school's 4th Annual Shootin' For A Cure event.
The $30+k donation came from a variety of sources including pledges for a popular shootout contest, raffles, tshirt sales and more. Hundreds of donations poured in from fellow students, parents, community members and businesses for the worthy cause. Last August, the Wells Rotary Club, in support of the girls, raised over $7,000 toward the Shootin' For a Cure total at their 13th Annual Chuck Cumming Memorial Golf Tournament. In just four years, the Wells teams have raised over $90,000 for York Hospital. "This community continues to amaze me. There are 427 students at Wells High School. For a town this size to annually show such an outpouring of support and love for these girls is incredible. Our formula has not changed. These girls have worked so hard to help this very worthy cause. While I'm happy we won the game, I told them that the win was secondary to everything else they accomplished that day. I couldn't be any prouder of the kids in our program and we are all grateful to the community for their ongoing support," said coach Abbott after their win Saturday night. The money they raised helps support York Hospital’s Breast Cancer Living Well Fund ‐ designed to improve the quality of life for women diagnosed with, undergoing treatment for and recovering from breast cancer. These funds support programs, services and support systems including rehabilitation exercise programs, integrative therapies like massage, Reiki and Art Hope, emergency funds for gas and food, assistance with prosthetics, etc.
Don Abbott and the Lady Warriors were as passionate about raising funds for the program as the hospital is
about providing the services. "We were absolutely amazed at the energy this event has produced. These students and players have a passion for this, they were excited, and we are happy to be a part of it. Knowing this donation will stay local and help those in our community going through a personal breast cancer journey is special. To have raised $90,000 in their four events, means this community has something to be really proud about. We can't thank them enough," said Knox.
