The York Golf & Tennis Club was the setting for the 29th Annual Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit York Hospital on Sunday, September 24th. Over 140 golfers, guests and volunteers arrived smiling as the weather offered the opportunity to enjoy a full day of Indian summer with York River views, while raising $27,000 for The Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging.

"Yes, clearly this year we were not only appreciative, as always, for our dedicated players, volunteers and sponsors…but also for the sun! When everything aligns, it makes for a successful day," smiled York Hospital Director of Development Carol Kane, "We couldn’t have scripted a better scenario!" This tourney’s proceeds will benefit the programs and services supported by The Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging: Patient Transportation, Meal and Prescription Delivery, Strength & Balance Workshops and Medicare Information Meetings.

The tournament is played every year in honor of Frank Ellis Hancock, who was instrumental in the growth and prosperity of both York Hospital and the York Golf and Tennis Club. He passed away in 1988 leaving a legacy of community service. His strong leadership and fundraising efforts resulted in a number of important hospital expansions between the years 1958-1978. His wife Kathleen "Kay" Hancock, who maintained her wit and mental edge until the age of 91, never missed a tournament in 27 years, And, continuing the legacy, two of the Hancock children, Cal Hancock of Topsham, ME and Joshua Hancock of Beverly Hills, CA, were able to attend this year’s tournament.

Following tournament tradition, players enjoyed grilled steak tips compliments of Seacoast Brothers Butcher Shop on Hole # 6, and après offerings from York Hospital’s Dining & Nutrition, from lobster ravioli to their signature crabcakes. After which the raffle and generous silent auction winners of Patriots, Red Sox tickets and local stores and restaurant gift cards were applauded – followed by the tournament winners.

Tournament Champions George Bryer, Steve Bryer, Steve Imbriano, and Ed Sanderson of Hannaford & Dumas Printers were cheered heartily and enviously, as they accepted honors and awards for having the low score of 60. Men’s Closest to the Pin honors went to Mike Major, MD of Webhannet Internal Medicine Associates of Moody, while Longest Drive Honors went to Margo Masson and Dan Houghton of Coverys.
