York Hospital Receives Seventh Consecutive "A" Hospital Safety Grade

York Hospital is pleased to announce that it has once again earned the nation’s top distinction for patient safety with its seventh consecutive “A” grade in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade (formerly known as Hospital Safety Score). Letter grades are assigned to general acute-care hospitals across the nation twice annually; Spring 2018 results were announced April 24th. Of the approximately 2,500 hospitals graded this spring, only 30 percent earned an “A” ranking.

The Safety Grade has become the gold standard measure of patient safety, cited in MSNBC, The New York Times, and AARP The Magazine. National performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

York Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Cutts states about the latest score: “We are pleased to learn that we received an 'A' grade, and we credit our providers and staff for their ongoing commitment to patient safety and quality care.”  Jud Knox, York Hospital CEO, adds, “Our  'A' grade is a testament to our entire staff’s efforts toward safety, quality and loving kindness for our patients. We are pleased to be recognized by Leapfrog and also thank Dr. Petrovich and Dr. Cutts for their leadership along with the entire quality team.”

Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single letter grade, ranging from “A” to “F,” representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. The Hospital Safety Grade is fully transparent, and its website offers a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades.

“Safety should come first for our families when we pick a hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which produces the Hospital Safety Grade. “We congratulate the Board, clinicians, administration, and staff of York Hospital for achieving an  'A' grade."
