Over the past few weeks, Kelly and Jared Laflin, owners of Beachfire Bar & Grille in Ogunquit, and their staff have been generously donating take-out meals to area health care workers and first responders. Earlier this week, caregivers at our York, Wells, and Sanford locations thoroughly enjoyed 200 of those meals, while another 100 went to the police and fire departments in Wells and Ogunquit. We are so grateful for the Laflin’s generosity and, in particular, the delicious meals which included pulled pork with beans, coleslaw and cornbread; homemade mac ‘n cheese; vegetable lasagna; salad; carrot cake, brownies, and chocolate chip cookies. We’re not sure we eat this well at our own homes!

With their five-year anniversary as owners of Beachfire Bar & Grille coming up this summer, Jared and Kelly say they feel “so happy and lucky to be part of such a great community!” They wanted to find ways to help and support all who have been supportive to them over the years.

One way is by donating to the Backpack Program for MSAD 60 (schools in North Berwick, Berwick, and Lebanon). They provide snacks such as granola bars, fresh fruit, and other items that “travel well” to help ensure that children who are food-insecure will still get some help during these challenging times.

When the pandemic hit, the Laflin family (yes, even their four kids are involved!) also started donating meals for those on the front line. Initially the used their own funds to buy the food, along with donations from some of their vendors. But as business has been increasing, patrons who have discovered what Beachfire is doing are sending emails or calling to ask how they can help. Others are giving donations when they pick up their meals at the restaurant. (Beachfire offers curbside pick-up every day except Monday.) By the end of this week, there will be a donate button on the website, which will make it even easier for people to help!

The Laflin’s also have a terrific staff, some of whom have been with the restaurant for 12-14 years, even when it was under different ownership. “They’re talented and hard-working, and we couldn’t do any of this without them. And each week, as we try to do more, we’ve been able to bring back more staff to the restaurant,” Jared said.

Jared continued, “Everything is a circle. We know that we need to support our frontline providers—hospital staff, police and fire departments—so they can make sure our communities are safe. At the same time, we’re able to keep our staff coming to work, and then pay our vendors in order to keep them in business. When everybody helps, everyone benefits—and we’re safer and happier because of it. Our goal is to provide these services long term. We know none of us can get by without a little help from each other.”
