yharbor-aerial-shotHow York Hospital supports our community

York Hospital is a small community hospital with a big heart. Our patients are our neighbors and friends. We know it is important to give back, and to provide services to care for all.

York Hospital gives back to the community in many ways. We partner with many schools, civic organizations and non-profit groups to support programs and services centered on healthy living, disease management, and community partnerships.

We also provide free care to many in our community who cannot afford care. On average, we provide over $6 million in free care to community members. We also instituted the innovative Help at Every Level Program (HELP) to help make care more affordable for those with high deductibles or no insurance at all, but who earn too much to qualify for free care.

We offer many programs and services to strengthen access to care such as low-cost transportation, meal & prescription delivery, and many home care services.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Friends of York Hospital Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that the application period for 2024 is now open for high school seniors in the York Hospital service area who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine and/or health care. All applications must be received or post-marked by Friday, March 29, 2024, to be reviewed by the Friends of York Hospital Scholarship Committee, comprised of hospital employees, physicians, and members of the Friends of York Hospital volunteer organization. This impartial selection committee evaluates the applicants’ high school records, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, including community involvement and work experience, to determine finalists to be interviewed. Finalists are selected largely on the basis of financial need, academic merit and health care objectives. Each will be contacted for a personal interview that will take place on the York Hospital campus (unless COVID-19 social distancing measures are still in place – then interviews will likely not occur or occur via ZOOM). Each interviewee will be notified by phone for an interview date and time. Applicants who do not receive an invitation to interview will not be further considered.

This year, the Friends of York Hospital will award three $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who reside within the Hospital’s service area [the southern York County, Maine towns of Kittery, Eliot, the Berwicks, Sanford, Lebanon, Kennebunk, Wells, Moody, Ogunquit, York], and who plan to have a career in health care. Scholarship awards may affect financial aid eligibility. Applicants should talk to school guidance counselors for details.

Scholarship recipients must enroll as full-time students in the upcoming fall semester and continue in school for the entire academic year in a health care curriculum. We ask that at the conclusion of the first semester of college, scholarship recipients should send an enrollment verification letter from the college/university to Friends of York Hospital Scholarship, Marie Aimo c/o Kate Ford, Volunteer and Student Experiences, York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. A check will then be made payable to the school and mailed there directly.

To be considered, ALL SECTIONS of the application must be complete and submitted with the following items:

  • An essay describing why the applicant has chosen a career in the medical field and why the applicant should be chosen to receive this scholarship.
  • Letters of Recommendation from high school guidance counselors/director and from a current or recent employer. In lieu of an employer, an applicant may submit a letter from a supervisor in an organization where the applicant is/was a volunteer.
  • Official high school transcript.

All interested students should contact their school guidance counselor for a copy of the application or download the application here and mail it, along with the required attachments, to: Friends of York Hospital Scholarship, c/o Kate Ford, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine 03909.  EMAIL: [email protected].  Completed applications along with required attachments must be received by or postmarked by March 29, 2024, to qualify.

The Carroll Family and The Rossiter Family Scholarship for Volunteerism

After six years, and over $30,000 in scholarships awarded to high school seniors residing in one of York Hospital’s community service areas, the committee is excited to begin the process again. Mrs. Patricia Rossiter of York, Maine, will award up to two $3,000 scholarships to class of 2024 high school graduates for their freshman year of college

“This scholarship was set up to honor my parents and my son. My father was a remarkable man who always wanted to help young people succeed. He used to say, ‘No one can take away your education.’ And like my father, I hope this scholarship helps young students begin their educational journeys—with a little bit of help and the knowledge that others both believe in and support them. It not only rewards students for their studies and activities, but encourages them to volunteer at York Hospital and gain valuable experience in helping others, too,” said Rossiter.

“We are honored to work with Pat Rossiter who set up the scholarship fund eight years ago for York Hospital high school volunteers who have given over 50 hours of volunteer service. Pat is a member of the committee and is such a joy to work with,” offered Kate Ford, who oversees the York Hospital Volunteer Program. “It takes commitment on behalf of these very talented high school volunteers, who often have competing scholastic, athletic and community service demands along with additional creative interests, but still find time to volunteer at York Hospital,” said Ford.

To be eligible this year, scholarship applicants must be class of 2024 high school seniors who are active volunteers at York Hospital; have volunteered at York Hospital for a minimum of 50 hours; are from a high school within the York Hospital service area of Kittery, Eliot, The Berwicks, Sanford, Lebanon, Kennebunk, Wells, Moody, Ogunquit and York; and plan to enter an institution of higher learning. For those who qualify, applications must be submitted on or before Wednesday, April 3, 2024.
