York Hospital is excited to welcome the following providers to its medical staff. March brings the arrival of Susan Boreri, MD, to the team in the Emergency Department, while Steven Birchenough, CRNA, has already begun caring for patients in the hospital’s Peterson Family Surgery Center. Elissa Finneran, FNP-C, sees patients in York Hospital’s COVID-19 Treatment & Infusion Center. Additionally, Hugh McGowan, MD, will be joining the team at OB/GYN, Midwifery & Surgical Associates in April.

 

Steven Birchenough, CRNA, joins his colleagues on the anesthesia team at the surgery center. Steven earned his BS at Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT, an MS in Nursing at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH, and an MS in Nurse Anesthesia at the University of New England in Portland, Maine. His health care experiences have taken him from York Hospital’s Emergent Care earlier in his career to Southern Maine Health Care, Dartmouth Hitchcock Memorial Medical Center, Maine Medical Center and, most recently, to Frisbie Memorial Hospital. When not caring for patients, he has enjoyed volunteering, travel and outdoor adventures, including service at a health mission in Quito, Ecuador and a “thru-hike” of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine.

 

Susan Boreri, MD, is now seeing patients in the hospital’s Emergency Department. Dr. Boreri arrives at York Hospital with experience that has included Medical Director of Beverly Hospital and Blue Healthcare PLLC in Ipswich, Mass. She has also been a member of the ER teams at Lawrence General Hospital, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Holy Family Hospital Merrimack Valley and, most recently, Anna Jaques Hospital. Dr. Boreri earned her BS at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and her MD at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, MA. She then completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at UMass Memorial Health Care Center in Worcester, MA. While outside of the hospital Dr. Boreri has made time for activities ranging from the Board of Health and Public Safety Committee in Ipswich, MA, to achieving a top-three finish rowing 20 miles around Cape Ann in the annual BlackBurn Challenge. Additionally, she has also accomplished a winter ascent of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington.

 

Elissa Finneran, MSN, RN, FNP-C, earned a BSN, RN from Rhode Island College of Nursing in Providence, RI, followed by an MSN, FNP-C from Rivier University in Nashua, NH. Elissa has begun treating patients in York Hospital’s COVID-19 Treatment Center located on Route 1 in York. Having held RN positions previously in the ER departments of Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket, RI, and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI, she also has experience in the ER and ICU departments at York Hospital. After becoming a family nurse practitioner, Elissa remained at York Hospital, where she treated walk-in care and, most recently, internal medicine patients. During the pandemic, she joined the team in the designated SARS-COVID-19 treatment area where she triaged, assessed, monitored and cared for high-acuity patients diagnosed with COVID-19. With her background in the ER and internal medicine, Elissa hopes to bring a skill set to the team that benefits the community within the COVID-19 infusion and treatment arena. In her limited spare time, you may find Elissa running, practicing yoga and meditating, hiking or playing with her two young sons.

 

Hugh McGowan, MD, joins his colleagues at York Hospital OB/GYN, Surgical & Midwifery Associates following a career that has included positions with OB/GYN practices and affiliations at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, IL; MaineGeneral Medical Center and Inland Hospital in Augusta and Waterville, Maine; Berkeley Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV; and Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, IN. Dr. McGowan’s extensive experience follows completion of a BS in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, an MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, IL and an OB/GYN residency at Methodist Hospital of Indiana, where he was Chief Resident. Throughout his career, he has been an active professor within the OB/GYN discipline, and the recipient of various teaching awards while at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, IL, Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency in Augusta/Waterville, ME, UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Biddeford, ME and West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV. With a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, Dr. McGowan looks forward to treating and caring for patients throughout the York Hospital community. When away from the practice, you may find Dr. McGowan and his wife hiking and exploring state and national parks, indulging his interest in Civil War history and visiting with their four adult children.
