If you drive by a sea of runners, walkers, strollers, kids, teens, adults and healthy agers, making their way through York Village on the first Saturday in June,  then it’s a fair bet you’re witnessing York Hospital’s official “start of summer” – the annual 5K Road & Cross Country Race!  More than a race, the community event, this year supporting York Hospital’s Recovery Center, attracts folks of all ages and levels of ability, along with a host of community volunteers that make it happen. With perfect weather as a backdrop, over 600 racers, volunteers and loyal supporters arrived to the hospital campus before 8:30 a.m. Registrants enjoyed the views from The Wiggly Bridge and historic Steedman Woods, ultimately returning to the cheers of their fans and DJ Mike Pomp, encouraging them as they approached the finish line. As the winners were tallied, all enjoyed the festival-like atmosphere including face-painters, food tents and trucks, soccer shoot-outs and a cornhole toss. Refreshments, well beyond typical race day fare, were donated by, Coca-Cola, Costa Food & Produce, Foster’s Clambakes, New England Coffee, Sysco, W.B. Mason and York Hospital’s Dining & Nutrition Team.

“Every year, our 5K road race continues to bring together folks who may or may not cross paths during their typical daily journeys. But all ages, abilities and skills this day, are on the same path enjoying each other, while also supporting a very worthwhile cause – York Hospital’s Recovery Center,” offered Jud Knox.

The York Police Department, York Volunteer Ambulance, York Parks & Recreation Department, York Department of Public Works, York Hospital staff and many community volunteers, including Lifeguards Emma Noel and Ryan Webb at The Wiggly Bridge ensured a safe race. A group of teens representing TIDALWAVSE, York High School’s student advocates for chemical free lifestyles, pitched in to provide water to thirsty racers. Proceeds from the day topped $18,400, benefiting The York Hospital Recovery Center – the premier seacoast area program offering outpatient substance misuse treatment for patients with Substance Use Disorders and for those affected by others’ use.
