The month of June marks Pride Month, a time to commemorate the Stonewall riots of June, 1969. Just last week (over 50 years later), the Supreme Court ruled in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning (LGBTQ) people, protecting LGBTQ workers from discrimination. At York Hospital, we’ve been proud to have a longstanding adoption of these principles for caregivers and patients alike. This is fundamental to our core value of offering genuine Loving Kindness. Yet, we realize that policy alone is not enough, both in standing with people of color, the LGBTQ community, and other minority groups.

As a way to publicly demonstrate these beliefs, we are encouraging our caregivers to Celebrate Pride Inside. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is a civil rights organization of more than three million members and supporters nationally. The HRC has launched the #prideinside hashtag for social media as a way for people to demonstrate their solidarity with LGBTQ rights at a time when community-based pride events have been cancelled due to physical distancing guidance with Covid-19. We urge caregivers, patients, and community members to celebrate #prideinside with #yorkhospital as another step toward reinforcing our belief in essential human rights, establishing our organization as a safe and welcoming environment for all.
