We are pleased to announce that York Hospital is the recipient of a Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for 2020. This award recognizes hospitals that provide an overall outstanding patient experience—delivering a positive experience for patients during their hospital stay—as reported by the patients. Healthgrades recognized 424 hospitals with this award for 2020, representing the top 15 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient experience. York Hospital is one of only six hospitals in Maine to be recognized this year. Winners were selected out of a pool of 3,346 hospitals that submitted at least 100 patient experience surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for admissions between April 2018 and March 2019.

Healthgrades evaluated hospital performance by applying a scoring methodology to 10 patient experience measures, using data collected from a 29-question experience survey from the hospital’s own patients. Survey questions focus on patients’ perspectives on their care in the hospital, ranging from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as provider communication. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family. For the past 11 years, patients who felt that “nurses always communicated well” were more likely to give an overall rating of 9 or 10 and recommend the hospital to family and friends. This year, a new “care transition measure” was included in the methodology, which evaluated “How well did hospital staff communicate to patients about their health and care needs as they were leaving the hospital?” Significantly, this new measure aligns most closely with patients who were likely to give an overall rating of 9 or 10 and recommend the hospital to family and friends.
