All are invited to get decked out on Wednesday, August 18, for an evening of fun, delicious food, and complimentary beverages during a two-hour cruise of Portsmouth Harbor and the surrounding coastline aboard the MV Thomas Laighton steamship. Join us to meet York Hospital’s CEO, Dr. Patrick Taylor, and celebrate the lives, well-lived, of Frank and Kay Hancock, long-time residents of Cape Neddick and supporters of York Hospital for whom the Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging is named. The Hancocks embodied the classic art of enjoying life and aging with grace and humor. A former Attorney General of Maine, and Hospital Board Chair, Frank was a powerful intellect who easily blended commitment to his community and family. Kay, always strong, caring and on the move—Hospital Trustee and chair of many committees—maintained her wit and mental edge until the age of 91. The Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging was established by the York Hospital Trustees in 2016 as a tribute to both Frank & Kay Hancock, recognizing their leadership, community spirit and service to York Hospital. That work is carried on now by their children Cal Hancock, Emi Betts and Josh Hancock. The Hancock Fund supports important programs at York Hospital such as Transportation Services, Strength & Balance Programs, the Center for Older Adults, Home Delivery Service for Meals & Prescriptions and much more.
During the pandemic, the Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging helped York Hospital meet increasing demand for medical house calls and home meal and prescription deliveries as many seacoast-area seniors sheltered in place. York Hospital’s Director of Dining Services, Jorge Descart, explained that many seniors who received and continue to receive home meal and prescription deliveries also have compromised immune systems, pre-existing conditions and/or frail spouses. “During COVID, many older adults were afraid to go out because they didn’t want to catch the virus or bring it home. They felt safe having our familiar York Hospital drivers do curbside deliveries, and we felt good knowing they were getting medications and nutritious meals to help keep them healthy at home. During a stressful time of social isolation, York Hospital checked in on them, and they truly appreciated it.”
