Congratulations to Mary Burton, RN, York Hospital’s first recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses! Mary is a member of York Hospital’s Special Procedures team and was nominated by her colleague, Yvette Bailey, Surgical Nurse Navigator. Yvette not only works with Mary but witnessed Mary’s compassion and caring firsthand while her husband was a patient at York Hospital.

Yvette sums up her reasons for nominating Mary as follows: “When I reflect on the DAISY Award and what the honor means, I truly think Mary is deserving. She represents what the foundation of nursing is built upon: the art of science and caring.“

“My husband presented to the emergency room via ambulance. Mary was his nurse while he was in Special Procedures. She explained what was going to happen every step of the way. She had a reassuring presence which put us at ease. This calm, professional manner cannot be taught, it is inherent in a nurse that knows how to connect with her patients,” Yvette explained on the nomination form.

Mary made such an impression on Yvette that it inspired her to seek employment at York Hospital. “Through the positive interaction I had with Mary I thought, this is a special hospital. I could work here. I applied for my position and am very happy I decided to come to York Hospital,” said Yvette.

The DAISY Award is an international program that celebrates extraordinary nursing care by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. York Hospital is excited to be partnering with the DAISY Foundation as a means of expressing gratitude for our amazing nursing staff. The strategic impact of this program on nurses is deep and has a positive effect on job satisfaction, retention rate, teamwork, pride, organizational culture, and work environment.
