Did you know that the foods we eat can help improve memory and concentration, and may also reduce the risk of stroke and age-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s? Have you noticed that your tastes have changed over the years, or that your swallowing feels different?

Join York Hospital for an educational and entertaining webinar with nutrition and swallowing experts who will explain how aging affects the way we eat, our food preferences, and how a healthier diet can support both brain and body function.

Lacey Bouchard, RD, LD, RDN, will discuss daily nutritional needs for older adults with an emphasis on important nutrients to help protect our brains and bodies and prevent cognitive and functional losses. Lacey will explore ways to reduce health risks, including the risk of developing dementia. Lacey will also review daily protein needs, address risk factors such as losing taste and unwanted weight loss and provide tips to prevent or improve these issues. Examples of appropriate and healthy food choices will be shared to help gain knowledge of how to shop for and prepare foods at home.

Maura Brown, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech/Language Pathologist, will review the physical changes associated with normal aging on our swallow mechanism and share ways to make mealtime fun and pleasurable. York Hospital services and other community resources that promote food security will also be shared.

All webinar participants will receive an inspirational gift to promote good health and hydration after the event concludes. The York Hospital Center for Older Adults is grateful to the Maine Health Access Foundation for supporting this educational webinar series to improve care for older adults in southern Maine.
