Following a two-year hiatus, York Hospital’s Annual Hancock Classic fundraiser returned in person—and on deck—Wednesday, August 3, aboard the MV Thomas Laighton. There were clear skies and calm seas as far as the eye could see, as York Hospital, the Hancock Family and generous donors from coast to coast honored their commitment to the lives of older adults in Seacoast and Southern Maine communities. Guests enjoyed a picture-perfect night with warm breezes, salty air, and the sun setting over the river, as they celebrated life, health, and well-being, featuring food, fun, cocktails, raffles and live music.

Many guests traded stories about friends or aging family members who benefit from Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging programs such as transportation services, strength and balance workshops, and meal and prescription delivery. They also agreed that recent senior-focused educational events, such as lunch & learns and Zoom-based book clubs, are both engaging and enjoyable for our older population.

“After this unexpected two-year interruption, we wanted to try something new this year – and it really succeeded.  All of our generous guests had a great time mingling on three decks, eating delicious food and listening to Ben Baldwin and The Big Note,” said Josh Hancock.  “And certainly, our sponsors were integral to the success of the evening and the ongoing growth of the Hancock Family Fund.  My sisters Cal and Emi and I are proud to continue the legacy begun by our parents decades ago.”

The Hancock Family Fund and the Hancock Classic were established to celebrate the lives of Frank and Kay Hancock, longtime residents of Cape Neddick and supporters of York Hospital in both word and deed. They both embodied the classic art of enjoying life and aging with grace and humor. Frank Hancock, in addition to the time spent in the Maine legislature, as Maine Attorney General and opening law practices in Ogunquit, South Berwick and York, chaired the hospital board of trustees for many years, and was a long-standing board member from 1954-1988. Kay, a graduate of Colby College (where she and Frank met), was an active member of the hospital’s Auxiliary and Women’s Committees throughout the years, maintaining her wit and mental edge until the age of 91.

Hospital President Dr. Patrick Taylor offered, “We are indebted to Josh, Cal, Emi and the entire Hancock family for their steadfast commitment to honoring their parents’ memory through the Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging.” Dr. Taylor added, “In addition, the generosity of our donors has always been a mainstay of York Hospital’s ability to serve our patients and community. This year’s Hancock Classic cruise was no different. Everyone was on board with the purpose of the event while enjoying the beautiful summer weather and sharing fellowship and laughter. Most importantly, everyone came together to support hospital programs that benefit our older adult population. We are deeply grateful.”
