York Hospital welcomed Jessica Stevens, MD, MPh, as Medical Director of Emergency Services at the beginning of August.

Prior to joining York Hospital, Dr. Stevens held positions in Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, ME and for the past eight years has served patients at Southern Maine Health Care’s Biddeford campus.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Stevens join our team here at York Hospital,” said Jennifer Cutts, MD, chief medical officer and interim co-CEO.  “Her impressive clinical skills, combined with her natural aptitude and keen interest in public health matters, make her an immediate asset to our colleagues and patients, and ultimately to all of the communities we serve.”

Dr. Stevens earned a BS degree from the University of Oregon’s Honors College, where she was chosen for an Undergraduate Teaching Award in Biology. She then earned a combined degree in medicine and public health at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, where she was co-president of the Public Health Interest Group and worked with Physicians for Human Rights. Dr. Stevens completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, the teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. She is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Stevens is the daughter of an organic chemist. Her father led various projects that brought the family to many locations and she enjoyed growing up both around the United States and overseas. The family always maintained close ties to Maine, with frequent summer trips to her grandparents’ home in Bangor. Three years spent in Thailand introduced Dr. Stevens to the concept of “access,” primarily equitable access to quality health care and education. A strong interest in that, combined with a love of math and science, led to a career in medicine. Dr. Stevens offered, “Although I don’t have a particularly “focused” agenda as I arrive at York Hospital, I’m very excited to support the Emergency Department in any and every way possible, while continuing the work toward finding ways to better serve our community.”

With a self-described “practical Maine spirit,” Jessica Stevens, MD looks forward to busy and fulfilling work at York Hospital. Please join us as we welcome her to the community!
