Classic Cars, Cool Treats, and Community Spirit Drive Support for Transportation at York Hospital

More than 25 extraordinary automobiles—from elegant Brass Era classics to modern-day exotics—turned heads and sparked conversations Thursday evening (August 6) as York Hospital and the Hancock family welcomed the community to this year’s Cars at the Club fundraiser.

Despite the summer heat, more than 100 guests gathered along the scenic York River to admire a stunning collection of automobiles, enjoy food and refreshments on the veranda, and cool off with colorful scoops served from a vintage 1983 Chevy G30 ice cream truck. The evening blended horsepower with heart, raising funds to support the Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging at York Hospital.

York Hospital CEO Dr. Patrick A. Taylor thanked attendees, sponsors, and the Hancock and Betts families for their generosity and support of the hospital's Drive for Transportation initiative. The program helps older adults overcome one of the greatest barriers to healthcare—getting to their medical appointments.

"Each month, York Hospital provides approximately 625 rides for patients—more than 7,500 rides every year," said Dr. Taylor. "Even with that level of service, the need continues to grow. It costs on average $150 to provide one roundtrip ride. That cost includes the driver, car, gas, tolls, insurance, maintenance, cell phone, and trip scheduling software. Community support is essential to ensuring our neighbors can access the medical care they need, regardless of transportation challenges."

Established ten years ago by siblings Josh, Emi, and Cal Hancock, the Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging honors the lives and legacy of their parents, Frank and Kay Hancock, longtime Cape Neddick residents and dedicated supporters of York Hospital. Today, the fund helps provide a wide range of clinical and supportive services for adults ages 65 and older throughout southern Maine and New Hampshire, including transportation.

For Josh Hancock, the evening brought together two lifelong passions.

"This event was especially meaningful to me because I absolutely love cars, and I care deeply about York Hospital and the communities it serves," Hancock said. "Knowing that transportation to and from medical appointments makes such a difference for thousands of people each year is incredibly compelling. Being able to showcase these amazing cars while supporting such an important community need is inspiring. We were thrilled to come together, have fun, stay cool, and raise funds for the Hancock Family Fund at York Hospital."

The Cars at the Club fundraiser demonstrated that when a community comes together around a shared purpose, it can help ensure older adults stay connected to the care they need—one ride at a time.
