Community Spirit Shines at York Hospital’s Annual 5K, Raising More Than $40,000 for Patient Care
More than 500 runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors, and enthusiastic supporters gathered on Saturday, June 6, for York Hospital’s Annual 5K Road Race, raising over $40,000 for the hospital’s Caring for All Fund.
Under clear skies and perfect racing conditions, participants enjoyed one of the Seacoast’s most scenic courses, winding along the York River, across the iconic Wiggly Bridge, through Steedman Woods, and past the York Golf & Tennis Club before returning to the hospital campus in York Village. The event celebrated health, community, and philanthropy while bringing together people of all ages in support of local healthcare.
Overall race winners were Dave Beaudoin of Manchester, NH (48 years old, 17:12), and Grace Sousa of Eliot, ME (23 years old, 17:41). Results for all participants can be found at https://www.gsrs.com/results/5950.
York Hospital Chief Philanthropy Officer David Hall praised the overwhelming community support, saying, “This race is one of the highlights of our year because it truly reflects the strength of our community. It is inspiring to see corporate partners running alongside healthcare professionals, trustees cheering on family members, and neighbors coming together to support a cause that impacts us all. The energy, generosity, and enthusiasm on display today were incredible.”
Hall noted that proceeds from this year’s race will support York Hospital’s Caring for All Fund, helping advance strategic capital projects, enhance patient care, maintain facilities, and invest in the latest medical technologies.
Race participant Bob Strout biked to the race that morning from Newburyport, MA, to participate in his 3,375th race since he started running competitively in 1969. He averages one race per week, and after turning 70 this past November, has already set six course records. “Maybe today will make seven,” added Strout.
Doug MacLellan was waiting at the finish line for his wife Srishty Anand to cross so he could present her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers to celebrate their first anniversary - and Srishty’s first-ever road race. “It was a fun way to surprise her this morning,” said Doug.
The York Police Department, York Parks & Recreation, York Hospital staff, and many community and student volunteers posted along the course ensured a safe and enjoyable race for all. They included lifeguard Declan Winston at The Wiggly Bridge, along with volunteer photographer Jeff Spires.
York Hospital Chief Philanthropy Officer David Hall added, “We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved, including our race participants, volunteers, hospital staff, generous sponsors, and our onsite partners this year, including All Star Mobile Hoops, M&T Bank, Seacoast Strength & Conditioning, and the team from York Village Fire Department & York Ambulance who provided CPR training for CPR & AED Awareness Week. It was a wonderful day for York Hospital and the communities we serve.”
