York Hospital is pleased to announce that Devyn O'Malley, BSN, RN, an ICU nurse, has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the second quarter of 2025. Devyn, who was nominated by ICU traveler Devin Grandi, BSN, RN, is recognized for her exceptional care and compassionate dedication to her patients.

The nomination highlighted a particular instance when Devyn went above and beyond for a newly diagnosed diabetic patient with limited literacy. According to Grandi, Devyn took the initiative to collaborate with the care team to ensure that the patient's supplies were delivered early so he could receive education while still in the hospital. Understanding that the patient could not read, Devyn personally created detailed, color-coded instructional sheets for the patient, drawing step-by-step illustrations of how to properly use his diabetes management tools.

From setting up the glucometer to injecting insulin, Devyn’s clear, visual instructions ensured the patient felt confident and empowered to manage his care once discharged. The patient was incredibly grateful and referred to the instruction sheets each time he checked his blood sugar until the day of discharge, when he took them home.

Grandi praised Devyn for her unwavering dedication to not only the medical needs of her patients but also to their emotional well-being. “Devyn provides excellent and meaningful care for her patients every shift, and this particular instance really stood out to me,” Grandi wrote in the nomination.

“Devyn exemplifies the qualities of an extraordinary nurse. She inspires everyone around her with her positive attitude, compassion for patients, and support for her coworkers. She is truly deserving of the DAISY Award,” Grandi said.

The DAISY Award, established in 1999, recognizes the clinical skills, compassionate care, and extraordinary contributions of nurses. Devyn’s commitment to providing personalized, empathetic care reflects the values of the DAISY Foundation and the hospital's mission to offer the highest standard of patient-centered care.

The DAISY Award is an international program that honors extraordinary nurses through nominations from patients, families, and coworkers. York Hospital is proud to partner with the DAISY Foundation to recognize the outstanding efforts of our nursing staff. The program helps foster a culture of gratitude, teamwork, and meaningful recognition across the organization.
