York Hospital is pleased to announce that Breanne “Bre” Roderick, BSN, RN, BHCN, breast care nurse navigator, has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the first quarter of 2026. The recognition marks a significant milestone, as Breanne becomes the first York Hospital nurse to receive the prestigious DAISY Award twice.

In her nomination, Dr. Kristen Koconis emphasized “the exceptional compassion, intelligence, and dedication” Breanne brings to the Breast Care Department, supporting patients during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Breast imaging patients often face high levels of anxiety and uncertainty, particularly when undergoing procedures that may be physically uncomfortable and emotionally overwhelming. According to Dr. Koconis, Breanne plays a critical role in easing that burden.

“Many of our patients undergo procedures that can be painful, and that may ultimately lead to life-changing diagnoses. Breanne consistently provides a calming presence.”

Dr. Koconis also noted that Breanne’s background as a former college-level field hockey coach shines through in her patient interactions, particularly in her ability to guide and reassure individuals during stressful times.

“She knows how to coach a patient through difficult moments,” she said. “Her positivity, gentle words, and empathy help transform these difficult moments into ones where patients feel truly cared for and understood.”

“Breanne’s care doesn't end when the patient leaves the biopsy room,” said Dr. Koconis. She calls patients the day after a biopsy to check on their recovery, a gesture that provides comfort during what is often an emotionally taxing waiting period.

Once results become available, Breanne sits with patients to review them, arranges surgical follow-ups, and, if a cancer diagnosis is confirmed, “meticulously explains the road ahead.” “She ensures no patient ever feels lost in the system,” Dr. Koconis said.

Beyond her comforting bedside manner, Breanne has made significant technical contributions to improve clinical processes within the department. Dr. Koconis highlighted her role in addressing challenges related to MRI-guided biopsies.

“We were struggling with software, connectivity, and procedural issues that were causing distress for both staff and patients. Breanne was instrumental in helping us refine the process, streamlining these difficult biopsies and directly improving the patient experience.”

Dr. Koconis concluded her nomination by emphasizing how Breanne embodies the core values of the DAISY Award through her professionalism, teamwork, and dedication to excellence.

“She is organized, smart, and holds herself to the highest standards, yet she remains one of the kindest people in the department. She is the epitome of a team player. Whether she is planning our multidisciplinary conferences, providing compassionate care to our patients, or helping fellow nurses, she does so with a spirit of collaboration.”

“Breanne improves the way we practice medicine, and we are a better department because she is a part of it,” Dr. Koconis added. “I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Award.”

The DAISY Award is an international program that honors extraordinary nurses through nominations from patients, families, and coworkers. York Hospital is proud to partner with the DAISY Foundation to celebrate nurses like Breanne, whose commitment to patient-centered care makes a profound difference in the lives of those they serve.

Since 2023, more than 100 York Hospital nurses have been recognized for their outstanding contributions, with 11 honored as DAISY Award recipients. This is a testament to the compassion, expertise, and teamwork that define nursing excellence at York Hospital and the powerful impact its nurses have on patients, families, and colleagues.
