Community Rallies for Cardiac Care at York Hospital Annual 5K Road Race

It was a foggy morning for the annual York Hospital 5K Road Race, perfect for running along the York River, over the Wiggly Bridge, through Steedman Woods and up along Organug Road past the York Golf & Tennis Club, then back to the hospital campus in York Village.  Over 300 registrants, volunteers, sponsors, and supportive fans came together before the rain, and raised over $30,000 to support the York Hospital’s Leading with Heart Cardiac Campaign

Overall race winners were, Dave Beaudoin of Manchester, NH, and Emily Gerraughty of Rochester, NH. Results for all participants can be found at https://www.iresultslive.com/results/?eid=6418.

Longtime race participant Joe Hayes said he has been running the York Hospital 5K for five decades. “I love this course because it’s different than most other local races—very scenic and challenging with a variety of terrain and hills.”

Joe’s running buddy, Tom Cross, who placed first in his age category, added that it is nice to be part of the community event and see all the different age groups participating together. “I’ve been doing the York Hospital 5K since I moved here from Ohio in the early 1990s. I love trail running and this course has a nice section through the woods. Plus, it feels good to help raise funds for hospital causes like cardiac care.”

York Hospital President Dr. Patrick Taylor thanked event sponsors and cheered on the runners commenting, “It is always exciting to feel the high energy at the starting line, and it is heartwarming to see whole families participating in the race together, oftentimes with the family pet or a stroller in tow!” All event proceeds this year support the hospital’s Leading with Heart Cardiac Campaign – providing life-saving cardiac care to this community when needed most.

Ethel Haselton, age 90, shared her sentiment about what the York Hospital 5K means to her. “I walk every day and enjoy this race very much. This year, I became friendly with another walker and told her about my recent diagnosis. Without even knowing each other’s names, my new friend took off a beautiful sea glass necklace with an angel pendant and placed it around my neck. She told me it will keep me safe when I start treatment next week. The sense of community, caring and kindness is very present at York Hospital.”

The York Police Department, York Parks & Recreation, York Hospital staff, and many community and student volunteers posted along the course ensured a safe and enjoyable race for all. They included lifeguards Ella Yentsch and Matt Leclerc at The Wiggly Bridge, along with volunteer photographer Jeff Spires.

York Hospital Chief Philanthropy Officer David Hall added, “We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved, including our participants, volunteers, staff members, and generous sponsors. It was a wonderful day for York Hospital and the communities we serve.” Post-race snacks and refreshments were generously donated by Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast, Native Maine, W.B. Mason, and US Foods.
